One such hero is attorney Lee Gelernt, one of many immigration law attorneys fighting for the rights of children separated from their families at the U.S. border.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-who-is-attorney-lee-gelernt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is attorney Lee Gelernt?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.columbia.edu\/faculty\/lee-gelernt\">Lee Gelernt<\/a>\u00a0is an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the deputy director of the ACLU\u2019s Immigrants\u2019 Rights Project. He is the lead attorney advocating and fighting for the rights of immigrants seeking refuge in the US. Gelernt has been discussed in multiple news sources, specifically revolving around cases against the Trump administration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-fighting-the-rights-of-those-seeking-refuge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fighting the rights of those seeking refuge<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Since the Trump administration\u2019s \u201czero tolerance\u201d policy on immigrants and asylum seekers at the southern U.S. border was put in place\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.law.harvard.edu\/lee-gelernt-a-fierce-advocate-reuniting-separated-families\/\">in 2018<\/a>, the ACLU filed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/aclu-files-national-class-action-lawsuit-over-trump-administrations-practice-forcibly\">national class action lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against the U.S. government, led by attorney Gelernt. Many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/immigration\/lawyers-say-trump-admin-has-handed-over-data-will-help-n1249782\">pro bono attorneys<\/a>\u00a0have also assisted numerous migrant children in hopes of reuniting them with their families. It has been two years since, and the Trump administration has continued to detain refugees and make the reunification process difficult.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/us-sued-over-expulsion-of-migrant-children-detained-in-hotel\/2020\/07\/24\/f97bfda8-ce15-11ea-99b0-8426e26d203b_story.html\">July 2020<\/a>, legal groups, including attorney Gelernt sued the US government to \u201cstop the expulsion of children detained in hotel rooms by the Trump administration under an emergency declaration citing the coronavirus.\u201d Once news leaked about the detainment, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement relocated the children but did not state where they were being relocated.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/cases\/texas-civil-rights-project-v-wolf\">On July 24, 2020<\/a>, attorney Gelernt filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government and stated \u201cthe Trump administration [was] holding children in secret in hotels, refusing to give lawyers access to them so it can expel them back to danger without even a chance for the children to show they warrant asylum.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As of December 2020, more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/02\/politics\/family-separation-us-border-children\/index.html\">600 migrant children<\/a>\u00a0have not been reunited with their families. Gelernt and other volunteers were fortunate enough to locate families and explain their rights, providing the options available moving forward. While attorneys are those who fight in courtrooms, Gelernt encourages \u201cstudents to organize, volunteer, and to continue to keep the issue in the public light,\u201d ensuring that government malpractice doesn\u2019t\u00a0 get swept under the rug.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>At Corvum, we value the drive Gelernt has to seek justice for those who have experienced traumatic familial separation out of their control.
