VoIP phone services<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are really one of the most basic tools any business should make use of, especially law firms, you know, since lawyers like to talk so much (insert winky face emoji). VoIP technology is the \u201cmake(s) it easier \u2013 and more affordable than ever for lawyers to seamlessly and effortlessly communicate with their clients and colleagues\u201d says the\u00a0ABA Journal<\/u><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>Beyond just being fancy phones with a bounty of convenient features as the above quoted ABA article points out \u2013 they enable one to \u201creceive unlimited phone calls, conduct conference calls, forward calls to your mobile or home phone, receive (and store) messages in different formats, manage calls on the go, send and receive online faxes, and much more\u201d.<\/p>\n

VoIP technology can actually do much-much-more than your run of the mill\u00a0POTS<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(plain old telephone service) or\u00a0PSTN<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(public switched telephone network). As mentioned earlier, forward thinking\u00a0VoIP<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0companies are now designing features which integrate \u2013 not only with the more general-use\u00a0CRM<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0software platforms, but with\u00a0LPM\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>software!<\/p>\n

Nothing new to the tech-savvy,\u00a0VoIP<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Voice over Internet Protocol) technology has actually been around since the 70s. Well, sort of. The site\u00a0VoIP Insights<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0touts the following history (we boiled it down a little):<\/p>\n

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) transmission began in 1973 as a result of the experimental Network Voice Protocol\u2026 it wasn\u2019t until 1995 that the first Internet Phone Software \u2013 Vocaltec \u2013 appeared\u2026The Vocaltec software compressed the voice signal, translated it into digital packets, and distributed it over the Internet\u2026 Although sound quality was poor and nowhere near that of conventional equipment at the time\u2026By 2000, VoIP traffic accounted for more than 3% of all voice traffic\u2026mass market VoIP telephony began in 2004 with the introduction of VoIP calling plans which permitted subscribers to make calls just as they would with conventional telephone company services.<\/p>\n

So if your firm is not using VoIP yet, you are only a decade and a half behind the times \u2013 which in the world of technology may as well be 100 years. Or more poignantly, as Ray Kurzweil writes in his 2001 essay\u00a0The Law of Accelerating Returns<\/u><\/strong><\/a>:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cAn analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense \u201cintuitive linear\u201d view. So we won\u2019t experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century \u2013 it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today\u2019s rate).\u201d Jeepers!<\/p>\n
